Cold, cough, some skin allergies and diarrhoea can be avoided by maintaining a hygienic lifestyle and proper grooming.
Human body provides many places to disease-causing germs to hide and they proliferate at those place and can be reason behind diseases. These places include the skin and in and around the openings to the body. This can be avoided if people adapt good personal hygiene habits. People should have managed hair and clothes, body odor, nice breath, clean hands and feet. My mom use to always say- “Maintaining personal hygiene is important to main a healthy life.”
Follow these personal hygiene habits in your regular routine.
1. Good grooming is an essential part of healthy hygiene.
Bathe regularly- Everybody should take a shower or a bath every day. However, if there is a shortage of water, at least you should wet sponge your body especially areas like groins, underarms, hands, neck. Always take a bath after swimming, playing out in the ground. Always wash your hair twice a week to avoid dandruff and lice. Scrubbing your body once a week removes the dead cells from skin.
Brush and floss- You should brush the teeth at least once a day. If you can, brush your teeth after each meal and before going to bed is the best way of making sure that gum disease and tooth decay are avoided. Flossing your teeth helps in removing the plaque and prevent teeth decay. This keeps you away from bad breath as well. To maintain a healthy smile, visit the dentist at six-month intervals for checkups and cleanings.
Trim your nails. You have no idea how unhygienic long nails can be?? Keeping your finger and toenails trimmed and in good shape will prevent problems such as hang nails and infected nail beds, gastric complaints.
Get proper sleep- Get plenty of rest — 8 to 10 hours a night — so that you are refreshed and are ready to take on the day every morning.
Wear clean Clothes- You should change your clothes whenever they are dirty. Dirty clothes should be washed with laundry soap before wearing them again. You should hang them in sun to dry. The sun’s rays will kill some disease-causing germs and parasites.
Wash your hand more often- You should always wash your hands with soap or handwash after going to toilet. Prefer handwash over the soap. Keep in mind to wash hands with soap before preparing and/or eating food, throwing garbage, coughing. If the hands are not washed off before preparing food or eating, germs may get onto the food. Alcohol-based sanitizing gel can be kept handy for times when soap and water aren’t available.
Foot care- Foot care is something that people usually forget as they are less visible. Always wear clean and right shoes and socks.Stay in bare feet at home. In Diabetic patient,foot care is must.
Make-Up hygiene- This is for women mainly.Wash your makeup brush and powder puffs on a weekly basis with a mild baby shampoo for best and safe usage. Kajal hygiene is must.
2. Consume germ free food
Always soak, scrape, brush, scald, peel or wash all fruit, salad and vegetables before cooking and eating. It removes the germs, soil particulates and chemical, fertilizers added during crop is grown.
Store food in the fridge at 5°C/41°F, do not overfill and allow cold air to circulate.
3. Toilet etiquette
As i have already mentioned about washing your hand after use of toilet even if you pee only. There are more toilet etiquette to follow as well such as
- You should never hold your natural call like urine or stool.
- Relax and never be in hurry when you pee. Do you frequently suffer from UTIs? Know everything about it.
- Stay hydrated
- In female cases, always wipe from front to back, to keep your vagina germ free.
- Use toilets which are clean, if not you can use “PEE SAFE”.
You should always clean and disinfectant your work and home places. Always keep your floor, bathrooms, tiles , working desks, pen, laptops and other objects that you use frequently germ free. Viruses may breed around these objects.
4. Hygiene for Men and Women.
Women and men has different genital areas. Women tend to get more infection but hygiene should be maintained in both cases.
Women- The vagina is able to clean itself no special care is needed, other than washing the external genitals. Do not use douches, soap at vagina. During menstruation, change tampons and sanitary napkins regularly, at time interval of 6-7 hours even if its not dirty. Always wash your hands before and after handling a tampon or pad.

Men- A build-up of secretions called smegma can form under th e foreskin of uncircumcised men. If you are uncircumcised, gently pull back the foreskin when you have a shower and clean with water. You can use soap if you like, but make sure you rinse it off well. If you can retract foreskin just rinse in water and wipe with clean finger.
Both men and women should use condoms and wash their private parts after having sex to avoid any STD.
These were some hygiene habits, follow them to avoid small illnesses. But always keep in mind, don’t run so much after the hygiene that you suffer from OCD. Some exposure to germs is good to maintain your immunity as well.
