A new outlook on authentic Homeopathy treatment.- by Alyssa Cohen

Alyssa Cohen is a registered Homeopath with the College of Homeopaths of Ontario in Canada. For her, healing is like travelling through a maze that has poor lighting and many dead ends. As a healer, her intention is to help people move through these challenges and stay on their personal healing path. She has supported people with a broad range of conditions such as; depression, anxiety, breast cancer, fibromyalgia, migraines, hormonal imbalances, thyroid conditions, children’s behavioural disorders and developmental support. Alyssa follows the classical style of homeopathy, giving attention to the patient’s whole life, including mental symptoms. The way she approaches her patients and explains homeopathy is uplifting. I believe every homeopath, homeopathic patients or any interested in homeopathy should look to her Instagram account @alyssacohenhomeopath

What does Alyssa has to say about Homeopathy?

The practice of homeopathy works best when there is a trusting relationship between the homeopath and the patient. As a homeopath, I want to understand the intimate details of how my patients feel, think and experience their lives. It’s through this detailed inquiry and sharing that I find the best remedy for each patient.

My practice is influence by 20 years practicing and teaching meditation. In my experience, what actually needs to be cured lies beneath most people’s conscious awareness. People are aware of what ails them but generally they don’t have a complete picture of the underlying issues. It’s not surprising that the root is obscured.  A person’s symptoms represent the body/mind’s best attempt to cope, given the sum total of past and present challenges. People are focused on living their lives and managing the best that they can.

It’s my job as a homeopath, to study the development and progression of these symptoms to see where the person can be stimulated on the road back to balance. In the classical relationship, patients report their symptoms and homeopaths analyze and then prescribe a remedy. I remember my early appointments with my first homeopath. I would talk for half an hour, he would ask some probing questions and then give me my prescription with virtually no explanation.

My approach is more interactive. I guide people into a level of self-exploration and sensing that helps them participate in the process. I explain to each patient how the remedy is intended to support him/her. I want people to feel empowered by homeopathy. I aim to give patients customized tools that they can use to support themselves in daily life.

Here are the quotes that I love from her Instagram handle.

Why do homeopaths love when your symptoms come back?

Our diseases build in layers that accumulate slowly over time. True healing is like unpeeling the layers of adaptation to bring us back into balance. As one layer releases, the one below becomes apparent. Particularly in cases where symptoms have been suppressed by pharmaceutical drugs, it isn’t uncommon for old symptoms to come back on the way to health. If the healing is headed in the right direction, those symptoms should come back in the reverse order of appearance.
Sometimes patients are a bit alarmed when an old symptom returns but in general, they don’t last as long and aren’t as intense as they were originally. The fact that the patient has progressed in his/her healing to the point that old symptoms returned means that he/she is responding well to the homeopathic treatment.

Homeopathy is highly customized to the exact details of what’s happening in your body/mind. We find remedies for people not for diseases.

Your body is your lab. Notice every detail.

Break your conditioning. Stop ignoring the subtle symptoms in your body. People say, “It’s nothing, I’m fine.” Fine or not fine is not the question. Holistic health care depends on your capacity to notice the subtle details in your body. It’s the subtle details that indicate how your body is responding to natural medicines. Notice your level of thirst, what foods you crave, your aches and pains, your sleep patterns, your dreams, how and where you sweat, your digestion, your thoughts… the list is endless. I’m not trying to overwhelm you or give you more things to do to take care of yourself.

Simply start by considering that the details of how your body is doing are useful and relevant. Your symptoms can empower you, rather than make you into a hypochondriac.

Homeopathy can support the creation of healthy boundaries.

People with healthy boundaries know their limits. They know when and how to say, “No”. They know when to rest, when to exercise and how much to work. They know how much ice cream their body can tolerate. It short, they know how to take care of themselves. Nobody gets it perfect all the time but healthy boundaries go a long way to creating good self-care.

So what about the people who don’t learn from their experiences and continue to act self destructively? They may eat in ways that hurt the body or engage in relationships that cause emotional pain or overwork or under sleep or whatever their particular vice may be. How is homeopathy useful in those circumstances?

Homeopathy works at the intersection of mind and body. Remedies are prescribed for the whole person, which includes the tendencies to self-destructive behavior or lack of boundaries. It even includes the pain that underlies the tendency to numb oneself in particular ways. Homeopaths explore deeply. We take time to get to know our patients and to understand them in the context of their whole life story.

I’m not implying that a homeopathic remedy can magically give you the boundaries you lack but it can support you in making the shifts necessary to take care of yourself differently.

Your tissues hold the story of your life.

Sometimes we need to do some inner archaeological digging to make sense of what’s happening in the present. Why is that reaction or sensation so intense when nothing significant seems

to be causing it now? When our present reaction seems disproportionate to the current stimuli it’s often the case that the past is bleeding into the present. We may analyze ourselves and come up with different theories or stories. However, the mind is full of defenses and coping mechanisms, which is why I find it so useful to go through sensation in the body to access suppressed feelings.

Everything that happens to us, good and bad, is imprinted energetically in our tissues. It’s as though the entire story of who we are is encoded. The best part is that the body reveals the truth without filtering it. We just need to learn to access it.

It isn’t as hard as it sounds. You can absolutely learn to feel what your body is holding. It’s like a type of meditation. Next time you have pain in your body or intense emotions, sit and breathe, make space to feel what’s emerging from the body.

Homeopathy supports children’s developmental stages.

“That mine!” – followed by a tantrum. Well, that’s just terrible two’s.

“Your not the boss of me!” – followed by throwing and stomping. Well, that kid is 6-7.

Eye rolling, deep sighs and general lack of cooperation – Pre-teen or young teen, that’s to be expected.

It’s expected because it is common, not because it has to be that way. When kids are acting out, yes, they are moving through their developmental stages but it doesn’t have to cause havoc in the household.

We forget how much energy it takes kids when they are going through a change, which is actually quite frequent. At every turn, things can be rough behaviourly until kids find a new equilibrium.

Of course try good parenting first – make more time to be present with that child, schedule more downtown for the parents and the kids, prioritize sleep for everyone, serve adequate protein and green veggies, be gentle and compassionate even when you don’t like the behavior, set clear boundaries, etc.

When common sense parenting is in place and there is still a struggle, think of homeopathy. I call my family’s homeopath with my kids once a month. Most of the time, the support is emotional, with some physical symptoms used to help find the best remedy. I’m using the remedies to support their stress levels. The truth is that things work best when the parents are getting support too. I hate to be sexist but it seems that the mom’s state affects the kids the most. So when mother and children have good remedies, everybody functions better and those impossible development stages pass without so much fuss.

Listen to your body when it whispers, so it won’t have to scream at you.

Your body is always talking to you. It’s telling you your food choices aren’t quite right when you have gas or bloating. When you are exhausted or can’t focus, you body is telling you that something about the way you’re living isn’t in balance.

People tend to think of the body as a machine, separate from their personal life choices. If something ails, the tendency is to go seek a reason. What’s wrong with the body?

The first place to look is in your own life. For example, consider what might be out of balance in your relationship dynamics? Are you saying yes when you ought to be saying no? Have you taken on more than is reasonable? Are you stretched too thin? Are you feeling stuck or disempowered? There are so many possibilities and each one can affect your mind/body health.

Are you eating nourishing food? Are you taking time to sit and eat your meals so that you can absorb your nutrients? Are you exercising? Getting fresh air? Spending any time in nature? Carving out time for you, even if it is just a few minutes? Getting enough sleep? Taking time to unplug and unwind before bed?

Listen to your inner voice. Are you being kind to yourself or are you berating yourself for every small step you do wrong?
All these details of living have a massive impact on your health. Pay attention!

Why is a homeopath posting so much about parenting?

My opinions come from fifteen years of parenting with a lot of effort to learn from my kids and grow as a person through my parenting. My practise as a homeopath and a therapist has also given me much perspective.

In my experience, the aspects of ourselves that need healing are the greatest impediments to showing up with our kids in the way we want to. If we study the tension and sticking points in our family dynamics, we can see our own material mirrored back.

Imagine if you had a toolkit customized to your child that could support him/her though the physical and emotional stressors? People tend to break down in similar ways again and again over time. It’s common that a child gets a similar type of cold repeatedly. Maybe that cold tends to develop into a dry cough whereas another child tends to get ear infections.

One child may get whiny and weepy when he/she hasn’t slept enough whereas another child will get hyper and restless. These differences are the characterizing symptoms that a homeopath uses to find a remedy that matches the whole child – mind and body. The most recent remedy that your homeopath prescribes would be your first go to solution if a sickness seems to be coming on. It would also be your first go to if any of the symptoms that were last treated start to come back.

Does this thinking seem way out there? Not to worry, you will learn how to make these connections by being a patient of homeopathy, either for yourself and/or for your child.

How can one little pellet make so much impact?

It’s not magic. It’s not sorcery. Despite what people might tell you, it’s not “just a placebo”. So what are these mystery little white sugar pills and how can they be so transformative?
Let’s start by answering, “What’s in a homeopathic remedy?” Homeopathic remedies are made from dilutions of plants, minerals and animal products (e.g. ink of a cuttlefish). When a substance is diluted past material form, it retains some residue, some memory of the substance. It’s like an energetic imprint of the substance that was there before it was so highly diluted and potenized.

When a substance is highly diluted, it bi-passes the primary action of that substance and what’s left if the secondary action in the body. Translated into plain English, let’s consider this example. If you ingest the plant, Belladonna, it has serious poisoning side effects such as high fevers, burning pains, dilated pupils, even hallucinations. In its homeopathic preparation, which conforms to regulated Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, Belladonna can be used to treat those very symptoms.

In homeopathy, like treats like. So if there is a patient with a raging fever who has diluted pupils, excess heat and hallucinations, a few pellets of Belladonna can go a long way. The homeopathic remedy is like ingesting an energetic dose of the same illness the patient has. It works by stimulating the patient’s own system to rally more effort to bring the patient back to homeostasis, or balance.
A homeopathic remedy acts like a trainer who is encouraging you to exercise harder. The remedy pushes the body/mind out of the pattern it’s holding by stimulating a stronger response. In acute illness, there’s relief and quicker resolution. In chronic disease, which is actually my main focus as a  homeopath, I are treating one layer at a time, gradually stimulating the patient to health.

When one family member heals the benefits cascade through the household.

When someone in the family makes a big shift in his/her health, the benefits help everyone else too. Poor health has a dragging-like quality and when it lifts, there is more space to connect and to thrive.

For example, let’s say the mom takes a well-chosen homeopathic remedy, the dynamics will shift with everyone.

For example, let’s say the mom takes a well-chosen homeopathic remedy, the dynamics will shift with everyone. Mom may have less pain in her body/mind, which will make her more patient and light-hearted. The kids will be brighter and there may be more ‘bandwidth’ for her to connect with her husband/partner.
Actually, in my experience, mom’s health is central to the happiness and functioning of the whole household. Moms do so much to take care of everyone else (not that dads don’t too). When mothers prioritize their self-care, it seems to oil the engine of the family and everything just works better.
Everyone in a family is continually sensing and adapting to the state of the other people in the household. From a young age, kids learn to perceive the subtly of their parents’ functioning. It’s not even conscious. Kids need their parents to be functional, to be ‘okay’, so they can be okay.

How does Kirtan help your body?

Kirtan is a form of meditation that uses the repetition of mantras, or sacred sounds, to still the mind and create connection. Freeing the mind from its daily obsessions broadens our perspective of ourselves. It gives us space to land in our bodies and just be. The experience of being present can do wonders to balance the body.

Given the busy pace of life, people are losing touch with simple presence in the body. The result is a constant state of inner contraction that leads to many health issues. In order to balance ourselves, we must carve out time to consciously relax and let go.

People think of relaxing as watching YouTube and Netflix or scrolling through Instagram. Kirtan gives our bodies an antidote to the speed of our online world. In brings us back in the natural rhythm of our breath and creates both deep relaxation and a beautiful expansion of consciousness.

You can book an appointment with Alyssa here. She provides session at her office or over Skype. Besides, homeopathy she also provides other therapy as well such as BCET, Kirtan meditation and workshops.
