You will think this is a fake article, if I am going to tell you that lemon can be unhealthy for you. Like everything, lemon can have side effects on your health as well if you are consuming it too much.
There is no doubt lemon or lemon water helps in weight reduction. And sometimes, people tend to drink this more just to lose weight. Here are some side effects of having too much lemon.
1. It can lead to frequent urination.
My mother- in- law made some concentrated solution of lemon by boiling them in water. And she drunk this for a week. While having this, she always use to complain to me that she has to go to pee again and again. I asked her to stop that liquid. And the problem got better.
Lemon juice can act as a diuretic. It can increase urine output, and may make you dehydrated. Acidic fruits like lemons can also irritate the bladder. This increases the urge to urinate more often. Avoid lemon water and other acidic fruits for about a week and see if your symptoms improve. If not, consult with us or any other doctor.
2. It may cause heartburn and ulcers.
Lemon contains the citric acid in good amount. If you have lemon in excess, stomach may take it as wrong signal. Reflux of the digestive juices in the stomach can activate the inactive pepsin molecules in the esophagus and throat leading to heartburn.
Lemon juice can also worsen peptic ulcers. We know how ulcers are formed – by excessively acidic digestive juices. Taking lemon juice (and other acidic foods) can only make things worse.
3. It can cause nausea and vomiting.
Vitamin C is present in good amount in lemon. Too much of the vitamin C can cause nausea, and in some cases, even vomiting. As Vitamin C is water soluble, your body, however, will try to flush out the excess vitamin C causing vomiting.
Even detox diets like the lemon water diet were found to cause nausea and vomiting.
4. It may worsen the canker sores
Canker sore are shallow sores inside the mouth and most of times they are extremely painful. If you add lemon then you are headed for disaster. Wait for them to heal completely before taking lemon.
5. It may decay tooth enamel.
Drinking lemon juice may cause teeth erosion. Yes, lemon gives you pearly white teeth but too much of it may not really be worth the effort. Be sure to brush teeth immediately after consuming lemon water.
6. It can lead to excess iron content in the blood.
Your doctor must be asking you to help vitamin C with iron because vitamin C encourages iron absorption in the body. And too much of it can lead to an increase in the blood levels of iron. Too much of iron in the body can be dangerous. Excess iron in the blood can also damage the internal organs.
Consuming 120 ml of lemon juice a day is considered safe. Ensure you dilute the juice before doing so.
